Excerpt from this week’s podcast “Just Do It” Book Marketing Ideas:
Q: David, it’s every author’s dream to have a bestselling book but in your opinion, why do so many fail to get anywhere near this level of achievement?
A: Authors think the hard part is writing the book, and really the hard part is marketing the book. until you’ve done it yourself as an author, you have no idea of the herculean efforts that takes. It’s marathon, book marketing, especially if you want to get your book anywhere near bestseller status.
Whether it’s Amazon bestseller, New York Times bestseller, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, you pick the list. Instead of realizing it’s a marathon, most authors treat it like a walk in the park, or even worse, they say, “when my book comes out then…” They don’t realize the campaign needs to start six to nine months before your book is even on the market. You have to market like crazy. It’s like having a child. It’s not like the kid can walk now so my job is done. It’s like you’ve got to keep going until that child is eighteen years old, leaves home, and he goes to college. It’s a serious commitment if you truly want to make your book have the impact, and have the sales numbers you feel you deserve. I find that so many authors are frightened to do any marketing until they actually have the physical book in hand which is three months too late!
